GGCF Tornado Relief Update
August 31, 2024
GGCF has provided $3,000 relief checks to those who made an application to GGCF and whose homes or businesses were categorized by EMA as destroyed. We will continue to fund these applications in these categories as they come in.
Those whose houses or businesses received significant damage (as determined by EMA) received $1,500.
Renters who lived in a home/apartment that was destroyed or categorized as majorly damaged by EMA received $1,000.
Those with medical bills not covered by insurance or uninsured will start to receive checks next week and as they get their bills from medical providers. GGCF will pay 60% of outstanding bills up to $10,000.
Michelle Carns was hired as our case manager and special projects coordinator to process the applications. Her salary is 100% being paid by a grant.
Free youth programs have been happening all summer from a special grant that has paid for camps through Extension, Adair Co. Conservation, Fitness Center, Greenfield Library, free movie days, free pool passes and more.
Thus far, we have distributed approximately $380,000 to homeowners and renters. This amount of money will not make anyone whole, and we realize that. We understand that victims of the storm could have received funds from FEMA, the Red Cross, and/or insurance. Just to be clear, our organization is grateful those agencies exist, but we have nothing to do with how they decide to distribute their funds.
However, we are glad they have done so in Greenfield and the surrounding area.
In order to receive funds from the GGCF, you must fill out our short form which you can pick up at FNB, Union State Bank, Greenfield Public Library, Matura/Neighborhood Center or the Chamber/Mainstreet office at the rear of the City Hall building or download from this site: GGCF Relief Application. Once completed, you can drop it off at any of those sites or email it to the foundation director, Jenn Garside (greatergreenfield@gmail.com). She is also happy to answer any questions and visit by phone at 641-745-5904.
July 26, 2024
We want to extend our gratitude to everyone who has submitted a "Tornado Relief Application." While the original deadline was Monday, July 15th, we are still accepting applications and will continue to do so in the future. Our board has been meeting regularly, and the process of distributing relief funds to those impacted will begin next week, following our scheduled board meeting on Monday, July 29, 2024—just two weeks after the deadline. We are thrilled to be able to provide this support so quickly.
During June and July, as applications were coming in, we focused on community events, especially for young people and families as many of the donations coming to the foundation in May and June were earmarked for youth programs:
1. Free Youth Camps: Through the Carver Foundation we were able to support free youth camps facilitated by the Adair County Conservation Board and by Adair County Extension.
2. The Lion King Stage Production: The Greater Greenfield Community Foundation's Shepard Music Grant supported the Disney "The Lion King" stage production for 2nd through 8th grade students. The uplifting performance took place on Friday, July 19th, and Saturday, July 20th at the Warren Cultural Center to rave reviews.
3. Free Pool Passes: Families affected by the tornado received free season passes to the Greenfield Swimming Pool, thanks to the Greater Greenfield Community Foundation and the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust.
4. Free Movie Admissions: We have sponsored two free movie admissions at the Grand Theater this summer, with another free movie event coming up in August.
5. Lifeguard Certifications: The Greater Greenfield Community Foundation and Roy Carver Charitable Trust enabled four Greenfield Pool lifeguards to obtain their Water Safety Instructor certifications through an intense 24-hour course. While regular swimming lessons were available this summer, this allows our pool to offer Red Cross swimming lessons next summer!
6. Replacement of Medical Prescriptions: Those who lost their prescriptions in the aftermath of the May 21 Tornado were able to get them replaced with help from the Foundation.
We will continue to accept new applications and assess the ongoing needs of the community. If you were impacted but have not filled out an application, we encourage you to consider doing so. For those who have submitted an application, we will do our best to keep you informed about additional programs (grants and other forms of assistance) that may be helpful to you and your family. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Thank you for your continued support and participation in these programs. Together, we are making a positive impact on our community.
